The irises I thought would never bloom!by Tara Nolan |
I finally grabbed these photos off my camera after writing about how I was worried my irises wouldn’t bloom. As you can see, they did just fine. I wished they would last the whole summer!

These ones I knew would bloom, but I thought I'd share them anyway!

The blooms on these purple beauties are magnificent! And they get so top heavy, they fall right over!

My irises finally bloomed also ! and it stirred up emotions…. you see, my neighbor, Ernie, had grown the Siberian irises from seed just for me. Whe planted them toghether 3 years ago. My dear good friend and gardening mentor passed away last year but his spirit is still with me through my garden where many of his gifts grow happily.
I have been waiting 4 years now for my Irises to bloom…..and still no blooms. The plants are very healthy with lots of tall leaves, and the plant root systems are sitting up enough on top of the soil. The Irises look healthy and happy enough where they are, but they never bloom.
They don’t get a lot of direct sun, though. They are on the south side of my house, but shaded the majority of the day, from the neighbour’s large Maple trees. They do get some direct sun around midday, and lots of indirect sun.
The only thing I think is preventing them from forming buds and blooms, is they don’t get enough daily sun?? Is that my problem, and I need to dig them up, and re-plant them in a sunnier location??
The other thing I have not done with them, is cut them back after they should have bloomed. I let them stay green and gangly all summer. Is that a mistake I am making, as well. Do I need to cut them down to about 6 to 8 inches from the roots, anytime about now?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!!
