Opulent ribbon and perfectly draped boughs elegantly frame a doorway

verily-victorian-inset2.gifOpulent burgundy ribbon, black feathers, touches of gold and soft green cedar accent this home’s symmetrical facade and beautiful door, transom and sidelights.

Floral designer Hilary Bellis finds people are often eager to try something new, but don't know where to begin. "When arrangements tie in with a home's colours and style, it's more cohesive and integrated," she says.

Materials

  • B.C. and gold-tipped cedar
  • Bright green moss
  • Pine cones
  • Artificial and real berries
  • Artificial cockscomb and amaranth flowers
  • Artificial branches
  • Ostrich fern fronds sprayed gold

The arrangements are anchored in blocks of moist floral foam taped into a plastic liner that fits inside the iron containers. “Moist floral foam helps cut branches stay fresh longer, and when the water freezes, it locks in the materials and adds weight to keep the arrangement from blowing over,” says Bellis. The swag above the door is held up at three points with wire attached to small tacks.

An artificial vine made of heavy, coated wire forms the base of the swag, to which Bellis affixed long, draping branches of B.C. cedar with cable ties. She then layered black feathers, artificial amaranth, large pine cones and ribbon overtop. The large, single cones on either side of the door are suspended from wire, fronted with burgundy ribbon and accented with a cluster of cedar, feathers, green moss and a bow.

It is so sad to see all those "naked" doors &/or verandas in the late Fall or Winter...these are great ideas! Something for everyone...Thanks, SM in Toronto
