Digging for garden collectibles

Is it a valuable antique or crusty relic?

Some items become highly sought-after because of a trend. For example, the 1940s and 1950s metal spring-form lawn chairs, also known as motel chairs (made in the U.S. by metal purveyors with their materials surplus), and the more scarce French version with a round seat and back fetch high prices even in poor condition. Restoration Hardware does a fine reproduction of the American-style chair. Photography by Carol-Ann Granatstein.
