Whether I’m in the garden, strolling the farmers’ market or at a horse show in the country, I’m always wearing a hat. Covering my face isn’t about vanity – it’s about safety. According to the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation, 80 to 90 percent of skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Most skin cancers are preventable – and that’s where a hat and sunscreen come in. The Canadian Cancer Society suggests wearing a hat with a wide brim that covers your head, face, ears and neck. For all of us who love to garden and be outdoors, The Canadian Cancer Society also recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. It should be applied on dry skin 20 minutes before going outside. When it comes down to it, caring for the garden is important, but looking after yourself is essential.
