Maybe they are from the same family? A lot of members of the carrot family produce those lovely umbrels of flowers.

Giant Hogweed on the Prairies
... invader suggest it is rampant everywhere, but I don't know if it can survive a prairie winter. We have Valerian in our garden, which resembles the Hogweed in some ways, at least from the photos. This stuff made the news here tonight too. I had seen it on the news, last year I think, but the story came from BC. Seems we have it growing here, and one viewer on the CTV web site said it has been here forever. Either way, it's best to avoid the stuff.

My grandson and I were playing with the dried up weeds one fall before I knew what it was. Lucky there was no sap left it it. It looks really interesting and attractive to kids and was really tall - at least 6 feet and we found a patch of it along 16-mile Creek in Milton area. I'm hoping that since ...

Its really enormous. It looks a bit like a huge coarse Queen Annes Lace, but the purple stripes on the stem are different. And it IS huge and it does stink a bit. It grows in ditches, wet sites, waste areas and its not common, but is becoming more so. Some people have a really severe reaction to it....

BEWARE - this is a very unpleasant plant that can impart a very nasty reaction - poisonous!
