Using this method the seeds are more easily spaced, since it is relatively easy to view where the seeds land, and the cover depth is more easily controlled. This is particularly advantageous with small seeds. In this case peas were planted.

I developed this method after hasseling with seed tapes. They break, when handling, and there is not a large variety available, plus they are relatively expensive.

At first I started out to make seed tapes, and after experimenting for awhile, I started thinking. There has to be better way. Either one spreads the seeds carefully at planting or is subject to thinning. When thinning, it is usually the largest plant that gets pulled.

Now I carefully plant on the paper and thinning is not necessary in most cases. I have been using this method for three years with great success. Practice makes for some efficiency. Wind was a problem until I started using the spikes as paper weights.

What was the mix that you used to cover the tape?

I had some smooth sand and though it would be lighter than the normal garden soil, but I gave up on that, since the sand sort of packed, and dried out rather quickly. Now, I just use the normal garden soil, and if it rains soon after planting, I place a board over the seed row, particularly the small seeds, also this prevents caking after the sun come out. I sort of play it by ear.
