My hydranga got zapped also. It always come back, but it is most annoying. There were not many leaves on it, but next frost I will cover it. I notice this happens almost every year, since I had the plant (three years).

Yes they should be fine... My dad had a butterfly bush that he had for years.. and it came every year. I know he trimmed it back in the spring as well.
The Frost is just the above ground... so the roots should be ok. YOu can also cover them with a plastic bag if there is a chance of frost .

Sometimes if you spray them with water the morning after the leaves will recover. Depends on how badly they froze I suppose.
