Suggestions for a flowering summer shrub/tree?

Postby Gage The Gardener » May 11, 2008 6:20 pm

Hello,

I live in Durham region just outside of the GTA in Ontario.

We have a lilac bush and were looking to add another. However, since lilacs tend to bloom in the spring and lose their flowers by early summer, i was wondering if there was something similar to a lilac that blooms throughout the summer.

Could anyone please recommend a tree/shrub roughly the same size as a lilac bush that flowers throghout the summer? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

One of the best shrubs that bloom most of the summer is a buddleia (Butterfly bush). It blooms continuously from mid-summer until frost. Grows 4 to 6 feet high, so give it space to grow and comes in a variety of colours.

Some of the "tree-forms" of PeeGee Hydrangea will give late summer/fall interest.
Some of the very tall Filipendulas(Queen of the Prairies) bloom in July, and although not a shrub/tree, give very nice foliage/boom/seedheads through the season.
