The government offers two types. The villosa lilac says it doesn't sucker much. We spent a lot of time this month trimming back a dozen lilacs that have been left to go wild for the past 10 years or so.

Thanks for some plant options. Hubby is off this week working on the barn so I will head out and pick up some of each of your suggestions since he is not there to rush me. Oh this week is going to be my "nursery/garden center" salivating time. I don't think I am going to mind not being off after all.
