Transplant shocked Towering poplar.

Postby Farwest » May 24, 2014 11:37 pm

I planted some 10 foot towering poplar last fall. Probably a few weeks too early. This Spring only some branches are leafing out. Is it possible to prune the dead??? branches off and the tree continue to grow or will the whole tree eventually die? Thanks for any advice.

Cut off all the dead branches........if the crown of the tree is dead, then you may lose that tree.....Trees showing signs of life will come along eventually......the newly planted trees are busy putting out roots, so you may not see alot of growth this summer.
Poplars love "wet feet"....keep the soil moist all summer and do not fertilize them this year.......you want them to grow roots, not feed them for growth......

The crown is still alive, green under bark, will it be able to grow new buds this year? The ones set from last year look dead or have not opened yet while they have on other branches.

Your tree should have leafed out by now......if not, prune out the branches......

Newly planted trees will grow slowly for the first season until they become established, so don't expect alot of new growth.....next season you will find that it will produce more leaves and branching.....

Remember to keep poplars very moist.......they need a wet condition
