Thanks for your help Brenda
I know exactally what you mean
I have far too much green showing.
The soil is so wet from rain, shovelling it would be a job but I will do it when it dries out some
I am hoping I am not too late doing this now and ruin my chances of getting a decent crop
thanks carolyn

Are you saying them will grow under straw?
I think I l let the tops get too tall. Between storms, humidity, working I didn't get out there to hill them since near 10 days an they grew crazy in all that rain
I just did now but I am running out of soil.
So I put about 1/ 2 bail of straw around the base of the plants and then soil on top of that but still a lot of green tops showing and they still need a lot of hilling yet.
I don't have many plants as I just planted 10lb of seed and I planted them to close together I think. It was hard to get soil/straw around them without breaking a few branches off. Not many but a half doz/
Should the straw be packed soild arounf the base of the plants??
Now I am out of straw and have little soil left. Now what?/
OH BTW there are no spuds showing through the soil so they are safe from burning so far
Thanks BF

I didn't get my potatoes hilled up last year and I still got a very good crop and there were only a few green ones. I was late getting them hilled this year as our weather was just too wet. I hadn't heard about using straw till this year and yes you can just pack it around the plant. Just make sure that you leave about 6 inches of plant still showing. I will try straw next year.

Oh thank you
I do have about 8-10 inches of tops showing.
I was going to try and get them hilled a bit more today but pouring rain again
So 6 inches of tops should show.
Ok now I don't feel so bad
I will hill some more as soon as I can
thanks

I think you will be very pleased with your potato crop, BF.
Some people plant in a long trough ...... and hill the trough up.
