Ripness is determined by the colour change from sort of green to yellowish=orange, and when touched the stem breaks away from the fruit. The final arbritrator is Neena, who sniffs her approval. If left in the patch for a couple of days after ripe, the stem connection is infested with some small black beetle.

Thje four plants are in their own bed away from the main garden, and the vines are allowed to spread over the lawn. A couple of cuttings after the vines are removed and the grass is back to normal
