Question about Squash
This year growing sqaush, ive used some old nylons to create hammocks for some of them to keep them off the ground so they stay clear and dry. But as the nylons I have access too are all black.. ( Boy did I get strange looks asking for nylons ) the amount of light on the squash itself is being somewhat limited.
I can see as the squash grows and the nylon stretches the fruit itself gets more light, but will this lack of light afftect how quickly they ripen ? ? ?
Off topic, that last sentence has got to be the strangest one I have ever written

Re: Question about Squash
Mervyn,
I've never done that myself [with any colour nylon. laf!], but I doubt it'll affect the rate of ripening.

Re: Question about Squash
It's the first time I've tried it too ( and only the second year I have grown sqaush) the first year I used to put styrofoam trays underneath them ( the kind that comes with steaks and the like, well washed of course)
This year I'm using a combo of the two ( I could only get so many nylons
) )

Re: Question about Squash
I can understand the nylon concept for holding the veggies off the ground
but I can't see nylons would make the veggies grow more tho
is this what you are saying?? They grow faster and better in nylons??

Re: Question about Squash
No not at all, they just keep them off the ground which (to my understanding) keeps the actual squash clean and dry.

Re: Question about Squash
I understand the concept of nylons on then
Hold them up off the ground to keep slugs etc off them
I wish I had know cause the slugs are eating my cukes and toms, the ones near or on the ground
