I was happy with my little haul this morning.
They'll be turned into a tomato salad this evening, with fresh mozzarella/basil/vinaigrette.

From top left, clockwise:

San Marzano, Amish, Black Zebra, Yellow Pear, LEMON CUKE!, Green Zebra.

I threw the cuke in just for fun! lol

It's not a tomato variety. It really is a cuke. I got the seeds from Inge. She and MareE, (BTW where IS MareE?), went on about them so much that I decided to try some. This is the first one picked, and I've never tasted one before. I'll give half to my DH and we can taste them together for the first time. It really is a cucumber! I picked it at this size, i.e. golfball, as this is when they taste the best apparently.

So, with a simply cooked chicken breast, there will be:

Half a lemon cuke each for starters! *grin*

Tomato Salad
Harvard Beets
New Potatoes
+ one other veggie, as yet undecided!

Which one is the cuke? I saw red so assumed they were toms

A friend of mine used to grow lemon cucumbers. I remember her telling me that if she didn't get around to picking them when they were little, she would eat them more like a melon as they got bigger.

I am always interested in different tomato varieties. My husband thinks ONE tomato plant is too many; I always grow at least three or four varieties. Which of those were the tastiest?

They're all good!
The San Marzano and Amish are paste tomatoes - lottsa flesh and few seeds! Very meaty and tasty! If one grew these in quantity they make wonderful sauces for bottling or canning, and even freezing them is good, as they don't contain a lot of water!

The Zebras are definitely the tastiest eating tomato. I've grown the Green Zebra for many many years, and last year I grew some seeds I got from Inge for the Black Zebra. I might even give the slight edge to the Black Zebra, sweet, juicy and, for the Black Zebra, just a hint of smokiness. But both the Green and Black Zebras are delicious. The little Yellow Pear I grow for visuals really - also they're great for snacking while working in the garden!

I also grow Bonnie Best and Carolina Gold. The Bonnie Best are a lovely tasting tomato, but they did not perform at all well this year.

Carolina Gold is a variety I've been growing for years too. It's a large, firm, golden yellow, tomato, which has a great ratio of flesh-to-seeds, and slices beautifully for sandwiches!

I should say, though, that my tomatoes have not performed as well this year. The foliage has been sparse and sad-looking, and the quantity of tomatoes per plant is well down. However, what tomatoes have come on and ripened, although a bit smaller, are very tasty.

The taste of a tomato though, is a very individual preference - like wine! There has been a lot of talk about how good the Brandywine is, and I may just have to try that variety too!!

I grow them in a raised bed, and the drainage is very good.

I think I'll give the Black Zebras a go next year if I can find the seeds or starters. Usually my selection is limited to what I can buy at the gardening centers or grocery stores. I saw Black Krim this year, but I passed on them...have you tried these?

I grew beefsteak tomatoes years ago, but I don't like unruly lumpy tomatoes, no matter the taste...for this reason I grow Big Beef, it remains nice and uniform.
