Help with appletree??

I have a young apple tree that was bought last year. It has a dark scaly patch on its trunk and all the branches that are in this patch are dying. Does anyone have any ideas what this can be and is there any chance of stopping it??

Could be a couple of things. What symptoms do the branches show that are dying?

There are numerous problems with fruit trees. Can we get a photo or if not a better description of the problem?
