how to prevent carrot discomfort?

This poor carrot either had too much water, not enough...or was just overcrowded, right? What would cause a carrot to do this?

Ive always been curious about this myself, I have always assumed it was caused by rocks and or compacted clay soils which forced the carrot to branch off to find new routes downwards, however according to this site.

The pH value should 6.5 to 7.5 for best results. Potassium promotes solid, sweet carrots. Wood ashes contain soluble potassium which reaches the plant quickly. Excess Nitrogen causes branching and hairy, fibrous roots.

We always grew carrots when we lived in Newfoundland. I wished we had taken more photographs of the anomalies! Some were just downright 'rude', but we did get a laugh from them!

Thank you for the carrot museum info. It's very thorough and explains a lot of my carrot-growing problems.
