Lettuce boxes
My husband and I made some screen boxes to use in our garden this year for lettuce and kale, last year the kale was covered in caterpillars. Hopefully this prevents them and we can eat kale all summer.

I think those should work well for most critters. You may still have problems with slugs and other critters that could get on the plant from the ground but it should keep a lot of pests at bay.
