It is very frustrating, Kelly. I hate to seem resistant to change, but this new format is just annoying. At last now I ge to respond (first time I've been able to....)

If you use the little red square on the left had side you won't inadvertently click the user name. 
It says "go to last unread" post or something like that when you hover over it.
