If you're uploading an avatar, or you know something has changed but you are unable to see the change, you need to clear the cache and reload the page... Generally pressing Ctrl+F5 on a PC (any browser) does this, or Apple+F5 on a Mac. This forces the re-load and ignores whatever your browser has previously loaded.
