I believe the red star denotes that one has posted in the thread. No star for me, but if I am correct - I will see it after this posting.

Well, I'll be a monkey's aunt. Wondered about that red star, too. Thought it was for posting excellence as true gold isn't possible. KIDDINK!

Could it be if scrolling - it has 3 pages or more of messages so an very active thread and if red - means someone added something since you last read it?
Just a guess but if you note, those topics with 2 or less pages don't move. I do know that it turns red when an addition is made to it.
