I would say you are 5a....and it is important because what you plant has to be good for your area...average winter temperatures...frost dates..

Wonder if that is because it is closer to the Bay???? Just a curiousity!! I am not far from your cottage and I am technically 5a but can get away with 5b.

well my postal code is kol1mo around the dunsford ontario area is the closest town to me.Im like 30 feet from the lake too

Ligularia is good for shade, it doesn't like hot sun on it's leaves. It likes moist soil. The Rocket is my favorite. Many of the hydrqangeas, Astilbe and Goatsbeard are good for shade.

You have avery nice location.
Have you considered native plants?
The periwinkle might not be a good idea, because it would likely spread beyond your yard.
