Pictures indicating a simple, practical method of utilizing downspout rainwater. Barrels cost 15 dollars and all parts and tools are readily available. Any urban downspout system must address the overflow problem during rainfall. The large bung hole is a reasonable compromise for overflow. The height is such that a hose may be utilized for watering plants. The system is readily expandable. I have four barrels, two on each side of the house.

The downspout water system was switched over to Summer mode by connecting the downspout to the storage barrels.

Our system isn't quite that elborate. I assume that the 2 barrels are connected so that when the one is full it flows into the 2nd barrel?

The barrels are interconnected through the normal drain hose. The water is always the same in any number of barrels connected in tandem. Any number of barrels could be interconnected.

Tthe real advantage is the technique used is a closed system, plus no elaborate structure is required, plus the height is such that gravity feed can be used for a considerable distance. The overflow bungs are closed when a rain storm subsides.
