Mortar/Hyper-Tufa Birdbaths

I've been mucking about with some mortar and trying my hand at making my own birdbaths. The ones in the stores are so unimaginative.....they look so "blah"......to me.

I'm going to keep on experimenting different looks and different technics in making birdbaths etc. for the gardens.

Here is my first try at making a rhubarb impression birdbath:

The birdbath is sitting on an old wrought iron pedestal and is still in the 'curing' stage. If you look carefully, there is still some pieces of rhubarb stuck to it. In a few days, I will be able to brush it off.

I like it, but there are a few little flaws. The next one is going to be better. I'm still learning.....

Any helpful hints?

How clever of you, Chelsea! I love it. I too have been looking at birdbaths lately, and agree: not much terribly interesting there.

I made a hypertufa bowl a few years ago, with a group of crafty women - fun outdoors in the sun!

You can let it dry completely, then brush with a stiff brush to remove any extra bits you don't like in there. Make sure it's good and dry though, or you'll scrape off some of the design.

I used my bowl as a hat for my male handsome garden piggy..... (which reminds me: time for a piggy makeover



here was piggy a few years ago, as a girl, at my homemade Crossing sign which the snowplow that year hit and destroyed.

It's not a hint, it's the "I love it!" post. Seriously, it looks so natural and far better than the so called garden art! All I ever managed with hypertufa are stepping stones!
