Try a rotary mower.They make some nice ones now,no emmissions,quite,light and you can even get them with baskets that collect the clippings.

Rotary mowers are great, though you have to keep up because if the grass grows too high, it becomes a pain to cut.

Another human-powered alternative is a scythe. I recently got an Austrian one and it clears the grass quickly and silently plus I get a good workout while I do it.
