Fall/Winter Fertilizer

Purchased a bag of Scotts® Turf Builder® Wintercare® Fall Lawn Fertilizer. The directions indicate to apply mid October. Just wondering if this is important for it working or can it be applied this month here in Southern Ontario Zone 5B. Thankyou for any help on this.

Grass does better in cool weather. This would be October
Grass does better in months with the most rain. This would be October.

Someone else could maybe touch on this, but (in my opinion) you will you get less run-off in October (that is, less Nitrogen loss from over water) than letting it sit an extra month before the ground freezes. Fertilizer isn't cheap.

So, if it was me, I would do it in October. But you can do it in September. Nothing stopping you. It won't affect much except maybe nitrogen availability in early spring. And this is a maybe.

Great, waiting until October is no problem at all. I didn't want to waste it so I will keep it bagged and put it down middle of next month. Thanks for the feedback and advice.

Dumbo is quite right - now in my Zone 3 area - we do this stuff in September, because we are freezing up in October.
