Clogged fountain pump

Postby George & Athelene » Jun 19, 2014 11:52 pm

How do I stop my fountain pump from clogging up? I have a laburnum tree just above it that sends small seeds and leaves into the water to clog up the filter. It only takes two days for the filter to clog to the point where the pump ceases to function.

I was thinking about fashioning some sort of cage around the pump with the metal mesh from a storm window or door. It would allow less suction and more surface area.

Any other suggestions?

Another filter (screen) would work. The mesh for screen doors and windows now is largely plastic. Easier to work with than metal mesh.

I have a pond with a buildup of leaves on the bottom that occasionally get sucked up to block the pump intake. This year I set it up on a paving brick that elevates the pump and its intake to above the level of the leaf litter.
