northern lights
THIS PICTURE, IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA.
THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED THIS WEEK ON THE IDAHO / WASHINGTON BORDER. THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1 HOUR.
CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20.000 FEET IN THE AIR, WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

Beautiful Smitty! And it's a true phenomenon. Not captured this week but true none the less.

Re: northern lights
I highly suspect the picture was enhanced in some photo editing program.
Ron.
The wood is clear between the knots.

Re: northern lights
Yes, I've seen this pic before and yes it is a real photo, but I suspect due to the saturated colours (either done with a filter at the time of the photo, or later in photo editing) it gives it a rather unreal look. It's called a circumhorizon arc.
There was one photographed by a Marc Sorensenin New Brunswick in 2003 The sky is a more natural blue in his photo....
An amazing sight to see and on par with the northern lights for sure!!

(If you read the text with the NB photo, I found it amusing that apparently the name "fire rainbow" is not liked by those that are serious about these things-lol. I wonder what Al Rust thoughts are on this. )

Re: northern lights
thanks for the info Cars. apparently they don't like it called a fire rainbow but personally I like it better than the technical circumhorizon arc
