Tomatoes in pots?

Postby dj_backq » May 03, 2008 11:18 pm

I've started to many tomatoes this year and the success rate is 100%. Now I've got a happy problem on my hands.... where to put them all.

I decided to transplant some in containers but I'm wondering what size to use. Any suggestions? I have both determinate and indeterminate.

I have grown mine in big rubbermaid containers. 4 to a container with one cage in the middle to tie the toms to. It works rather well for me and is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying 4 big pots!

Eeyore, would you please take a picture of this, planted or unplanted....I am getting a tad desperate here.

Seriously, four to a container????

Depth, spread...etc???

How big is your pot Lyn. 4 to a container sounds like a lot,
since the roots spread to an area bigger than the plant itself.

Tomatoes are also heavy feeders.

I have a pot that's about 2' wide and am thinking that one plant will be all
the soil can handle. I'm new at this and any info would be welcome.

I use the big 17 gal black pots that tree's come in. I have 4 of them for my toms. and they love it. The black heats up nice and gets the roots nice and warm.

i have my eye on the fiber pot that my neighbors new tree came home in. I hope he puts it on the curb for garbage day ehehehe.

I also put only one tomato plant per very large tree pot!
Maybe if you have a small determinate you could actually get away with 2 or 3 in one large pot. However, my Green Zebra and Bonnie Best get their own pot!

I too recall you mentioning pot tomato planting, Lyn. I'm hoping to take this container plant route too and was wondering what size of Rubbermaid do you recommend. i.e. depth too? Thanks many.

This is the only picture I have showing the tomatoes in the rubbermaid containers.. They do get quite crowded.
