Amaryllis (Hippeastrum)
Amaryllis (Hippeastrum). This plant has seven flowers, three on on stem and four on the other. It was a gift at Christmas, and bloomed from just a bulb in less than a month.
The blooms are inspiring during our long Winter season. A much needed moral booster this Winter in particular, since it has been long and rather dreary.

Question: when should i start fertilizing my Amaryllis (Hippeastrum), after a period of dormancy? It's first new stem is growing quickly... I'm keeping it hydrated for now.

Usually sufficient food is contained in the large bulb, and little additional fertilizer is required. Adding a bit of water while blooming seems to keep the flowers fresh a few days longer. I have kept the bulbs from year to year, but other than the money for buying a new plant, it probably isn't worth the effort.

Oh, well. I didn't find it any effort at all, actually. I wasn't sure I would be able to achieve a second blooming period, since I had no place to keep the dormant plant at the right temperature, but it seems it worked anyway!

I couldn't resist. If this isn't worth the wait, I don't know what is. My Hippeastrum Puniceum (right?) has not only grown 80 centimetres tall, it is also blooming.... I can't wait to see the flowers!
