Coir is also more ecologically friendly, says my Container Gardening book by Stuart Robertson. It is used to replace peat. Apparently peat is very difficult to obtain, takes a long time for all its components to decompose, etc.
He also says 50% new soil each year, btw.

Thanks for the info everyone.
I see compressed coir (Natura brand) is available at Home Hardware. They also have bags of worm castings which sounds like a good idea too?
Would a 50/50% coir/worm castings mixture be good..... then mixed in to with the old soil, approximately 50/50 ratio again?
