I have planted potatoes, peas, carrots, beets, and radish. I have found if the carrots germinate during the warm spell in April, that they are superior to those planted later. Carrots take about 7 days to germinate if the temperature is right. By planting the radish early , I hope to defeat the flea beetle, also they like cool weather. Being located in Zone 5b has it advantages, when it comes to gardening.

Some greens and root crops are cold-hardy; they can tolerate some frost without collapsing. In fact, carrots taste better after going through a cold snap.
This year, I'm going to plant spinach for the Fall and then try to overwinter it in the garden for next Spring (or at least until December).

This is last year 2007 on the 24 of May. Look what is up and thriving. I planted most of the stuff that is up in April, some plants are bedding plants. I have been doing this the last two years, and getting away with it, with rare exceptions. But I do choose which seeds to plant. Many vegetables can withstand some frost without damage, also sometimes the frost isn't right at ground level.

One of the advantages of raised beds is that they will dry and warm sooner in the spring. Sandy soil would also help of course.
