Yes it is okay to use greywater from handwashing sinks, tubs and showers for your garden.

Water which has been used previously —
dishwasher, humidifier, laundry — may offer an
excellent alternative to treated municipal water for
outdoor watering needs. Apply to the soil at the
base of plants, but avoid using grey water that
contains borax or bleach — and, never use water
from the toilet. Also, check with your municipality
about regulations concerning the use of grey water

Sunkeeper, gr8 link. I may revert back to doing this again. Did it years ago when I had no plumbing at my cabin! With the global warming more widespread to the northeast, it may be necessary to be more frugal in how we dispose of our precious waters. Thanks for posting this!

I am very interested in trying to figure out how to use grey water on my gardens... we have an old roll up to the sink dish washer, the best idea I can come up with is sticking a bucket under the tap when it drains back in to the sink.... any better ideas out there? I know you can install greywater systems in the house, but that's not financially realistic at this time.

Just be careful using water from the dishwasher - most dishwasher soaps contain phosphates which may not be great for the garden. I would check this out first. There are a few companies coming out with phosphate free soaps for dishwashers now but check on the box of the detergent (sp??) you are using to see if it contains phosphate.

PLUS, the gray water ends up recharging the ground water rather than going directly to a treatment plant and into a river.
