There is some controversy about allowing onion to bulge above the ground as they mature. The view is that they get larger, and have a less stinging flovour if exposed to sun.

I have two rows of Yellow Spanish Onions, and have covered one row of bulbs with light mulch and earth, and the other has all the earth removed down to the beginning of the root.

Both rows will be allowed to mature, and they will be judged as to size and taste, in an attempt to determine if the claims have any validity that is apparent.

also...how do you keep your onions standing up like that? Mine are all flopped over and I keep stepping on them as I walk thru my garden.

The onions are just doing what comes naturally. They will flop at some time in their growth cycle. I do like to see them upright as long as possible, but take what I get.

The floppy comment was something that I was just thinking about this morning as all of onions have flopped over and I was thinking maybe they need more water. But I guess as all is well

A neighbour gave me some new ones 4-5 years ago

I couldnt get over the flavor. So much nicer than we buy

I meant to grow some this year but after seeing these I will next year

I love onions just cut up and boiled then lots of butter and salt

How long do they keep after picking??

Just wondering if it is worth while me growing for one person

Do they need to go in a cold cellar?
