fungus on Amaryllis (dormant) soil

Postby isabelbrinck » Sep 22, 2009 6:53 pm

Hi,

I (stupidly) kept watering my Amaryllis pot after the leaves had yellowed and been cut off. Don't ask me why; I've stopped now. I just put it in the closet for dormancy. I noticed it was growing some white fungus on the soil. When I ran my finger over it, it "disappeared' but I figure it might come back.
Do you have experience with this? Any solutions?

I would plant the bulb in new soil.

Thanks Eeyore :)

I have just brought my Amaryllis out of the closet, to see if I can get a bloom by Christmas. I followed instructions found here: http://www.rochestergardening.com/bulbs/amrylcar.html and removed with top part of the soil. It works out with your advice, too.

Now here's a new question: when is it time to re-pot one of these babies? I read they like to be pot-bound, but I'm afraid mine might be TOO pot-bound. Root-bound, really. As soon as I swept away the top soil, large roots showed up... that close to the surface!

Safe to re-pot in a slightly larger container? Any tips?

Thanks
Isabel
