How to prune indoor hibiscus ?

Postby jrmtl » Jun 12, 2012 8:42 pm

Hi all,

I need to prune my hibiscus plant now as it's getting out of control but without damaging it.
Here is a pic and there aren't too many blooms now so where exactly do i need to trim?

Once the blooms are finished you can trim as much as you like. Just decide how much you want to remove and snip just above a leaf joint. It will grow thicker and bushier.

Thank you very much... I just wanted to make sure .
I cut it more than half down as blooms are all gone.

How long will it take to regain new stems ? Just fertilized also

Rule of thumb is not to cut more than 1/3 at any one time. Some plants will just die if you cut more than that. Not sure about the hibiscus though.
The internet is a very, very, serious entity created solely for commercial gains.

Try starting new plants from the cuttings you made pruning your hibiscus.

It's a little more involved than that , but there are some good instructions on growing hibiscus cuttings you can get by doing a search on "hibiscus cuttings".
Many of our plants and shrubs can be propagated by taking cuttings of them. The methods vary a bit from plant types, but all are very similar in that either new growth "tip cuttings" or semi mature material is used for the different plants and shrubs. A search on the plant you want to try propagating from cuttings will bring up several " how to's for it.

Just don't fuss too much. Don't over water or over fertilize. If it was growing well where it is then just leave it there. You should see some new growth in about 2 weeks or so. Usually where you have trimmed it back to you will see not one new shoot but two! Good luck, and let us know how things go.
