Yes, it's a type of Fritillary, a butterfly often found near wetlands and meadows.
As your butterfly is quite worn it's difficult to make an exact ID of what kind of Fritillary, but as I see you live in Eastern Ontario that would narrow it down to likely the Great-Spangled Fritillary as seen in Andy's website here> http://www.ontariowildflower.com/wildlife_butterfly.htm#fritillary
Nice visitor to have to your pretty garden!

Thanks Carol,
I had a feeling you would know what kind it is.
I'll check the link you gave me.
Love the pictures of yours I have Monarchs around also.
By the way I did see your pictures in the Birds an Blooms magazine a few years ago lovely.
Keep up the good work...

Thanks Mary-Jane! I'm glad I could help. I've just ordered a new butterfly ID book that should help narrow down the tougher ones hopefully. I've had three new visitors here so far this summer that needed names.
If you see this Aug/Sept issue of Birds & Blooms, that's my photo of a Monarch right there on the front cover.
He's on some Joe Pye Weed.
