Ripened Today!
It's that time of year again when it's a race to keep on top of the tommytoes ripening on a daily basis.
Here's today's haul:
Brandywine, Black Zebra, Italian Noire and Gold Dust.
I guess we'll just have to eat another tomato salad and another tomato sandwich! lol

Re: Ripened Today!
Nice. I really have to try those heirloom tomatoes one day.
The tomatoes on my side are finally ripening up. So far over the past 2 weeks I seem to get about 6-lb of tomatoes every 2 or 3 days.
Donna needs to give me a recipe.

You should Marc. We're talking night and day here. Taste and texture.
If you have a chance pop into Inge's website and have a look. She carries an amazing variety of heirloom tomato seeds. I've exchanged seeds with her over the past few years. She's very professional and provides great quality seeds. I grow some varieties that she doesn't, but not on her scale - just for us, family and friends.

Yeah i plan on getting some from her this coming winter. The father in law would like those as well, and a couple of others I can think of.

Yay, I got to have my first homegrown tomato sandwich today - YUM!
I did also enjoy my first picking of some interesting green beans last night too - Dr. Fothergills dwarf bush beans, which end up being a very nice french style 'filet or haricot vert' bean, with a very pointy spike on the blossom end. Tasted good too.

Re: Ripened Today!
So I ended up with 36-lb of Super sans marzano tomato's and big beef tomatoes yesterday, total over a few days.
I had 2 strainers full of cherry tomatoes as well, so I oven roasted them (no one really eats them as is in salad) like this http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/08/ ... -tomatoes/ I used a very hot pepper oil a friend gave me from Italy on them and some hot peppers from the garden.
Came out good, but still too sweet for my taste, but they were burning hot/spicy.
I decided to add them to the tomato sauce I was making from the 36-lb of tomatoes to get rid of them. The sweetness of them added a better taste to the sauce.
End product, 5 litres total when I was done. Such a small amount for so many tomatoes.
First time I make a sauce from tomatoes like that. Came out ok.

So sorry to hear this Inge. Just recommended your site to a couple of friends that were looking for a Canadian source for heirloom seeds. Edie

What a shame Inge! So much competition out there though. You'll have to find another, cheaper, way of advertising yourself. What about a blog, facebook, twitter - all free, but time-consuming! Your forum friends could make a note of it and pass it along!

Re: Ripened Today!
another great way to advertise is sites like kijiji.
you could post in severage provinces or a general add that everyone sees for a few bucks. however i imagine this time of year not many people are looking to plant.
but im sure some people like growing indoors
