Lilac tree doesn't look good

Hello everyone, having a problem with my fully grown lilac tree this year..not sure if it's because of the hot weather...or not having enough water...but all the leaves are wilting and curling. Would you know what's wrong with it?.

It's difficult really to say but there are a number of possibilities.

1) not enough water, if you haven't been watering put a hose out there and let it drip water for quite awhile, I would say a really good soaking. It will need that before winter sets in anyway and you want water to get to the roots.
2) some type of pest - look carefully at the leaves, top and bottom to see if there is any evidence of pests or webbing.
3) Is there any evidence of the trunk being damaged, either broken bark or a split in the trunk?

Thank you Eeyore, I'll do that...I would hate to loose the tree.

I had 2 lilacs, one developed a split in the trunk and 1/2 of it died. It was only a matter of time before the other 1/2 died so it had to come out. The other one which is about 20 years old no has a split in it but so far is hanging on. I'm hoping it heals itself, I'd hate to lose it too. I love Lilac and I would definately have to replace that.
