Re: Dahlias and Earwig control
I would definitely try the Vaseline. I bought inexpensive Peroleun Jelly from the Dollar Store and smeared the Stems from the bottom up[. The damage was minimal compared to previous Years.

Put sand around your plants as slugs and snails do not like crawling on gritty sand.

I don't have Dahlias and didn't look at this thread til today. I noticed 'some' earwigs on my Blackberry bushes (thornless) and I am looking forward to trying the vaseline on their main shoots next year - thanks for the tip!! By the way, for slugs, I buy the curly copper scrubbers at the $$ store (cheap) - they pull out into a long tube & I connect a few of them to form a circle around hostas or anything that slugs attack. I have also used crushed up egg shells - seems to help.

I must try the curly Scrubber idea,I do get Some Slugs in a certain area of my Garden which tends to stay a bit on the damp side,I hate picking them off YUK ! they are so slimy! The Pictures I posted are of some of my Dahlias this Year, ! brought them in at Thanksgiving.

Your Dahlias are gorgeous!! I use the copper scrubbers around my hostas and never have any slugs on them! I think they were $1 for 3 in a pkg. I just pull each ball out into a long tube, join them (sort of) together and put them around the base of the plant - creating a barrier to the slugs.

Beautiful Dahlias
For slugs and snails, I use wood ashes liberally spread on top of my gardens. They will not crawl through the wood ashes.

Yes, I have used wood ash too - works great. I just don't have a wood fireplace or stove now so I have to resort to the other finds. It's really great to hear what others use too.
