What's eating my tomatillos?

Postby Tara » Jun 13, 2013 10:15 am

The leaves of my tomatillo plants are being munched away. There are these black and orange beetles, usually found in pairs, other leaves have these tiny orange eggs and others have these little larvae. How do I get rid of them and what are they?!

I posted this question on the Canadian Gardening Facebook page, too, and discovered it's a Colorado potato beetle that's decimating my tomatillos. Apparently they can completely defoliate the plants. I cut all the affected leaves off and got rid of the bugs by hand. I'm going to try sprinkling diatomaceous earth to prevent them from coming back - and before they move onto my actual potatoes and tomoatoes!
