Starting Walla Walla Onion Seeds for 2014. About 40 seeds were placed in one pot. They will be transplanted to individual pots when large enough to move. The pot was placed in a plastic bag to retain moisture and placed on a heating pad in the greenhouse. Walla Walla are my favorite onion for eating raw.

I have Walla Walla seeds, too. Any tips? Do you use the plastic bag in place of a domed lid?

When growing plants the plastic bag makes a individual environment for each cultivar. The domed lid is not so selective. The plastic bag keeps the moisture constant. I open it up after germination, but leave it on the pot so water can be kept in the bottom. It is also more simple than the domed cover.

I like to have each plant growing in its own pot for a month or so before planting out in the garden. The onion needs a long season to get huge. I also direct seed some in the outdoor garden but they don't get as big as the greenhouse started ones.

I have only been growing Walla Walla for a couple of years. I suspect one needs new seed each year. I tried germinating last years seed on a plate, the five selected did not sprout.

Walla Walla has to be the best onion that I have been exposed to.

Thank you for the tips! I've never grown onions from seed before. The Walla Walla came highly recommended. :)
