Spades and shovels for all your garden tasks

Our contributors dig up the dirt on spades and shovels

GREENLINE PRO BORDER
I'm a bit biased when it comes to this model since I own this spade myself. Similar in proportions to the Greenline Pro Dig, the stainless-steel blade will never rust and is considerably easier and lighter to wield than the average spade. The only downside is that, although its edge will remain sharp for years, when it does eventually dull, it'll be more difficult to sharpen than a carbon-steel blade. I use this spade a great deal for transplanting, but it really shines when it comes to dividing established perennials. D-type hilt, short shaft. $50

GREENLINE LIGHT HANDLE
This is the garden shovel that stole my heart, primarily because it seemed to be the closest thing to the original article. A really good, solid design is almost impossible to improve upon, and for my money this is the real McCoy. The five-foot shaft is con-structed of hardwood securely that is bolted to a generous steel bowl with sharp slicing edges that can be spruced up throughout its life with a few strokes of your whetstone. Relatively lightweight, functional and simple. $20

YARDWORKS PRO-GRADE
This carbon-steel spade has a ridged edge securely bolted to a sturdy, medium-sized ash (hardwood) shaft, capped off with a Y-type hilt. Although initially very sharp, the ridged surface might be difficult to sharpen. However, I really like the broad shoe-treads on the shoulder of the blade, which make digging heavy clay soil considerably easier. $30
