A lovely read for both the young and young at heart

One Small Garden, by Barbara Nichol, Tundra Books, $14.99

A charming collection of diary-like entries about the author's 100-year-old garden in Cabbagetown, Toronto, that covers topics as diverse as ants, tulips, tree experts and trespassers in a delightful prose that's botanically sound.

Although the text is aimed primarily at children aged nine to twelve, adult gardeners will also find much to reflect on in its spare but elegant paragraphs.
