For more than 150 years, the Harrow Fair has been a tradition
in Ontario’s Essex County. Nestled between Lakes Erie and St. Clair
at the southernmost tip of Ontario, Harrow (pop. 3,000) and region
lie on the same latitude as Tuscany, Italy! Thanks to a temperate climate and a long growing season, this “Sun Parlour of Canada” boasts some of the most productive farms, orchards and gardens in the country.
To celebrate the bounty—and the fair they’ve loved since childhood—sisters Moira Sanders and Lori Elstone, with colleague Beth Goslin Maloney, compiled The Harrow Fair Cookbook (Whitecap, 2010). Recipes for enjoying the best
of your vegetable garden (Bread
& Butter Pickles, Tomato & Basil Sauce, award-winning Zucchini Bread, an Italian-inspired dish of Mozzarella-Stuffed Zucchini Flowers) make this book a blue ribbon favourite in your kitchen.
