Lure of the lingonberry

Long popular in Europe, these versatile, tangy red berries deserve more recognition in Canada

Partially self-fertilizing, lingonberries require only one variety to produce fruit. However, growing two or more different cultivars will usually increase the yield; for maximum harvest, plant ‘Red Pearl’ or ‘Sussi’ beside another cultivar. Breeding programs, especially in Europe, have produced varieties with larger berries and higher yields than plants from the wild. All cultivars are hardy to Zone 2.

‘Red Pearl’ (a.k.a. ‘European Pearl’) Brilliant green foliage, vigorous upright growth habit and spreads rapidly in good conditions. Grows to 40 centimetres tall and has medium yields of mild-tasting, bright red fruit.

‘Regal’ Vigorous with moderate spread; 15 to 20 centimetres tall. From the third season onward, produces two early crops of medium
to small red fruit.

‘Sussi’ Vigorous plant with a spreading habit once established. Grows 15 to 20 centimetres tall and yields abundant crops of large red fruit.
