Creating pathways
A few relatively wide paths (1 to 1.5 m) through the centre and/or around the perimeter allow for easy walking and wheelbarrowing. In a sandy garden, the natural soil, compacted over time, creates a firm, well-drained path. Where clay abounds, resurfacing may be necessary. Sand mixed with small gravel chips makes a dry path. Porous mulch materials such as wood chips or various forms of paving work well, especially when laid over landscape fabric or layers of newspaper or cardboard to prevent weeds.
