9. Kent loves to add what he calls “living walls”: screen plantings for the outer edges of the garden that give it a sense of leafy enclosure. One of his favourites is hardy bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosuleata): planted in large pots for portability, it’s practically indestructible (as long as you don’t let it dry out), and fills in quickly. It even works on condo balconies. Some familiar alternatives are evergreens like cedar or boxwood, or spring bloomers like bridal-wreath spirea and Peking cotoneaster.
