All dimensions are height x width. Note: All types may also be planted in moist soil, preferably clay-loam.

‘Black Gamecock’ Louisiana iris (Iris ‘Black Gamecock’)
Zone 4, 60 to 90 cm x 60 cm   
Description: Sword-shaped green leaves form upright clump; huge, dark purple (near-black) blooms with small, yellow signals in early summer
Comments: Deer resistant; good erosion control on banks; good cut flower    Water depth: Up to 15 cm deep

Variegated Japanese iris (I. laevigata ‘Variegata’)
Zone 4, 75 x 30 cm
Description: Wide green leaves with cream- or white-striped edges; large, showy, light lavender-blue blooms in late May (or early June)
Comments: Vigorous but not rampant
Water depth: From 5 to 20 cm deep

Double yellow flag (I. pseudacorus ‘Flore Pleno’)
Zone 3, 80 x 90 cm
Description: Sword-shaped, bright green leaves with glaucous surface; arching clump; unique double flower with extra centre petals; yellow blooms with a brown signal in early summer
Comments: Large, attractive fruit capsules for floral arrangements
Water depth: 15 cm deep

Variegated yellow flag (I. p. ‘Variegata’)
Zone 5, 80 cm to 1.2 m x 45 to 60 cm
Description: Attractive, sword-shaped green leaves with bright yellow stripes that fade to green by summer; arching clump; bright yellow flowers with a brown signal in early summer
Comments: Large, attractive fruit capsules for floral arrangements
Water depth: 30 cm deep

‘Gerald Darby’ iris (I. x robusta ‘Gerald Darby’)
Zone 4, 60 to 90 cm x 45 to 75 cm
Description: Attractive, sword-shaped foliage; leaves in spring are purple at the base with purplish black flower stalks, fading to green in summer; violet-blue blooms in late spring or early summer
Comments: Vigorous, quick-spreading rhizomes, not overly invasive
Water depth: From 5 to 10 cm deep

Blue flag (I. versicolor)
Zone 2, 75 cm x 1 m
Description: Attractive, narrow, blue-green leaves; arching clump; typically light to deep blue flowers (also purple and violet) with white and yellow markings on lower sepals and darker ones on veins in early summer
Comments: Early to emerge in spring; decorative seed capsules; provincial flower of Quebec
Water depth: 15 cm deep

‘Kermesina’ blue flag (I. v. ‘Kermesina’)
Zone 2, 40 to 60 cm x 60 to 90 cm
Description: Attractive, narrow, blue-green leaves; arching clump; reddish purple blooms with distinct white signals on sepals in early summer
Comments: Early to emerge in spring
Water depth: 15 cm deep
