Plants - Perennials

Tough, reliable and beautiful, yarrows can tough it out in the summer heat

Another of my favourites, and the first yarrow I ever grew from seed, is ‘The Pearl' sneezewort (A. ptarmica [The Pearl Group] ‘The Pearl'). The only yarrow to prefer part shade and moist soil, its cultivars sport fluffy, white, double flowers (a bit like baby's breath) from early to late summer (50 by 55 cm) and are hardy to Zone 2. Their foliage is different as well—a needle-like, glossy green.

But perhaps what excites me most about yarrow is what's still to come. This is a plant that seems to have unlimited capacity for reinvention and keeps coming back into fashion. Recently, a nursery in California has begun to offer subspecies from environments as diverse as California's Santa Cruz Island and Mt. St. Helena, while over in Britain, Rougham Hall Nurseries continues to add new fade-resistant shades to the spectrum. Willem van Herreweghe of Belgium has introduced no fewer than six new cultivars in the past two years, some of which apparently stay in bloom for a staggering six to eight weeks. Without doubt, the best of these new introductions will wend their way to our shores before long.
