“I grow magnolias on my windy hill in Nova Scotia, so most anyone else can, too,” DeLong says. The only trick is to provide enough space for the variety you want. Rich soil with moisture but adequate drainage is also key. “I don’t try the yellow forms,” DeLong says. “They’re a little more cold and wind sensitive.” Love yellow? Wait a bit. Breeders are developing hardier forms all the time.
